Green Streets mobile field kitchen

Join Rebecca Beinart and her mobile Field Kitchen for a ride along the river Trent, hunting for wild food on Tuesday 14 September at 6pm meet at the Suspension bridge on the West Bridgford side. We will be cooking foraged foods on a rocket stove.
This trip will involve a mixture of cycling and pauses to learn about edible plants and foraging.
Field Kitchen is a bespoke bicycle trailer that incorporates the necessary equipment to cook edible plants found on expeditions in urban wilds. The project examines what we can find in our immediate surroundings for sustenance, pleasure and well being – raising questions about our relationship with plants and food, our reliance on imported goods, and lost fields of knowledge.

The emphasis of this trip is less about cycling a long distance and more about exploring the area we meet at 6pm at the Suspension bridge on the WB side and the foraging will last about 2 hours. Contribution of £3

Field Kitchen comes to West Bridgford

As part of the Green Streets celebrations Rebecca Beinart came with her Field Kitchen to share her foraging knowledge with us.
12 of us met at the Suspension bridge and made our way along the river to the nature reserve at the side of the Wilford bridge.
Armed with brown paper bags (for possible goodies on the way) we set off. Blackberries, mugwort, plantains, red and white clover, horse raddish, jack in the hedge, nettles, dead nettle, silver weed and dock were some of the herbs I can remember, more can be seen on Rebecca's website.

At the end of our trip we sat down next to the lake and taste some wonderful nettle and sage bread, some freshly brewed mugwort tea with some blackberry bakewell cake.
The evening was cut short by a heavy rain shower but it did not dampen the wonderful experience.
I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank you to Rebecca to sharing her expertise and give us her time.

Many of the local West Bridgford residents know me from the lady with the cloggs and her bike trailer. I was virtually born on the bike, for me the bike is a mode of transport, I commuted to school 20km a day and I was not the only one... millions of people cycle in Holland to get from A-B on their bikes. For many it is a way of life.
The first british town I arrived in was Cambridge so for as far as I was concerned cycling is a way of life in the UK too. It was a little bit of a shock to then move away into other towns. Living in West Bridgford is quite good for cycling compared to many other areas. My dream though would be to make it more cycling friendly so that more people young and old can experience this fast and cheap mode of transport in a safe way.

Secure bike compound at Nottingham Station

The Secure Bike Compound at Nottingham Station was at last opened this afternoon, postponed from Bike Week, so we need to spread the word, via our website and in other ways. I gather that the existing stands in the Porte Cochere area at the front of the Station will be removed in about two weeks and Keith Morgan of the City Council has assured me that this will not be done until the replacement stands, for short-term visitors to the Station (buying tickets or making enquiries) have been provided. Initially these will be on a temporay site on the pavement outside and later on a more permanent site inside as part of the revamping of the whole Porte Cochere area for shops, cafes and pedestrian access only (i.e no taxi access and no other bike access). Watch out for the likely publicity about the new Bike Compound in the Post in the next day or two.

Family Bus Travel Prices Slashed for Half Term

Nottingham City Transport will once again be slashing the price of family bus travel during next week’s school holidays.

Group Rider tickets will be available for just £4 from the bus driver during the half-term holidays, offering unlimited bus travel for up to 5 people (min 1 adult, max 2 adults) within Greater Nottingham on all NCT services.

Anthony Carver-Smith NCT Marketing Manager commented, “With so many events going on across the City over the holidays, it makes sense to get there and back with Nottingham’s local bus company and our fantastic money saving £4 Group Rider offer.”

Group Rider tickets can also be used on City Council Link services and once purchased from the bus driver, they can also be used on the tram too.

The Group Network Rider ticket, which extends to cover South Notts and Pathfinder bus routes to Loughborough and Southwell will be reduced to just £6!

On Bank Holiday Monday, 31st May 2010, a Sunday timetable will operate on the NCT and NET network, with W4 operating for workers at Boots, Beeston.

Doctor’s Orders for the Mobile Travel Centre

Nottingham City Transport’s popular Mobile Travel Centre bus is following doctor’s orders by visiting both major hospital campuses from this week, as the new timetable is launched for the summer.

On alternate Wednesdays through until the end of September, the Mobile Travel Centre bus will be visiting the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital Campuses, offering bus journey planning advice and Easyrider Citycard top ups to staff, patients and visitors.

Anthony Carver-Smith, NCT Marketing Manager commented, “We are absolutely delighted to add the QMC and City Hospital campuses to the calling points for the Mobile Travel Centre. We have served thousands of regular customers since we launched the bus last year and look forward to meeting new people and making new friends at the hospital sites”.

The Mobile Travel Centre will continue to visit Arnold Town Centre, Beeston Market Place, Bulwell Market Place, Clifton Library, Netherfield Morrisons and West Bridgford Library, as well as the West Bridgford Campus of South Nottingham College each fortnight and a full timetable is available at www.nctx.co.uk.

Yesterday saw the 12th celebration of Green Streets Walk/ride days that we organised to make people aware and experience what it is like to leave the car behind and make a special effort to walk, cycle or use public transport.

This is one of the numerous Transition West Bridgford initiatives to get our town involved in making it more resilient and less dependent on oil. Over this last year hundreds of local people have made this special effort and I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank you to all.

When Cllr Khan a year ago launched the campaign on Melton Road in front of Celebrations, businesses like Celebrations, Taste, The Green Boxshop, Caffe Nero, Belle and Jerome, Inspiration, Flowerbay in Lady Bay, The Lady Bay pub and Signature really put all their enthusiasm and energy behind the event, gave discounts and incentives to all those who walked and cycled and wore something Green. Nicola Pearson and Paul Philipps from Rushcliffe BC, Lin Taylor of our Library and Chris from Pedal express worked tirelessly to promote the event, designed, printed and distributed posters and flyers and cycled for miles with a bill board to announce the forthcoming walk day.
Schools like, Jesse Gray, WB Junior School, Greythorne Primary School had assemblies, sold badges and raised awareness to both their pupils and the parents. For this I am extremely grateful as I know that time is precious and that these days even primary schools are working to an amazingly tight schedule not giving much lee way to do anything else than follow the curriculum.

We had Green Streets events on the Croquet Lawn and monthly guided bike rides organised by members of Pedals and members of Transition WB. A special Thank you to: Malcome and Margaret Kennerley, Brian and Kathy Shaw, Hugh McClintock, David Nicolson Cole, Kate Troy, Sheila Hood, employees of Games Workshop and Cllr Mallender for giving their time to show people in West Bridgford that it can be quick, easy and fun to cycle to various local destinations. The events on the Croquet lawn were hard work at times but made it all more rewarding to see that every single month, members from the West Bridgford Skills exchange, Jonathan and a local resident and a handful of local businesses came to help out and spread the message.

And then, there were the badges…. 12 different ones were printed for sale at 20 p in various locations but mainly through our local schools, where little champions were selling and promoting them. I would like to give a special mention to Natasha and her friends and Eleanor Collard who I know organised special events to sell the badges and promote the cause.. The idea behind the badges was that it would be an incentive to walk or cycle that day not realising that it had an even more diverse impact on the children.

Collecting these badges meant they had to be persistent and determined, they had to save their pocket money, they had to take care of them, treasure them and not loose them and that the reward of doing this would be that they would be entitled to go in the prize draw to win a bike.

Today is that big day, with the money received from all the 20p’s that you have paid to buy the badges, we have managed to buy a bike and helmet, The Green Streets birthday cake, the catering for this event and possibly 3 bike maintenance lessons in West Bridgford in the near future. If you are interested in these, please sign up and leave your details.

We have all contributed to this celebration in our own little ways and hope that you will continue to promote the last Friday in the month as a walk/ride day to your friends, colleagues and neighbours by handing out a badge to wear proudly on the day. The badges, some literature on cycling in WB and a window sticker are in the goodie bags that you will receive on your way out. Happy Walk/ Ride days and Thank you for making this year so rewarding for so many people.

Message from Cllr Rod Jones

Dear Resident

I am pleased to tell you that on 21 April 2010, Notts County Council decided to make an Order establishing another Public Right of Way. This is a path which joins the Ruddington side of Landmere Lane, goes through the Underpass and east along the verge.

I applied for this path in 2009 as it had got separated from the other applications on a technicality. I would like to thank all those who gave evidence of useage including those who provided photographs.

The Underpass was blocked with earth by the owner of nearby land, Mr Wells, a few years back. It is not his land and the Highways Agency have said they are requiring him to remove the earth so they can access the structure and drains. The County Council are looking to install a gate of some sort which would not allow access to motorbikes. So it may take some months to be effective and post-signed.

This new Right of Way joins the path which leaves Sharphill Wood from the South and hits the A52. That path is already a Public Right of Way and is one of the eight upto and within the Wood which I successfully applied for over the period 2006-2009.

I am particularly pleased about this last path because it will provide people/walkers with a connection between Ruddington and West Bridgford. Tthe A52 sadly truncates 2 bridleways but there will now be a safe means of crossing.

‘Rural Rides’ is a programme of guided cycle rides. Following quiet lanes and off-road routes at a leisurely pace, there are frequent stops to take in points of interest or just to admire the view. Designed for the casual rider, all shapes and sizes of cycle and cyclist are welcome!

To join a ride all you need to do is select the ride from the programme and turn up at the start point at the time stated. All rides are free of charge and most of the leaders act in a purely voluntary capacity. They are, however, experts on the rides they lead and will offer a wealth of local knowledge and comment.

Greening West Bridgford: Challenge 1: if your journey is not far, leave the car!

Soon the whole of West Bridgford will receive the Greening Campaign Challenge cards through their letter box.

One of the challenges is to walk/cycle if your journey is less than 1 mile.

I have just come across a wonderful invention to stay safe and visible on the road for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and other road users. I hope you find it of interest too.

Vote Bike - By the National Cycling Organisation

With the general election approaching, now is the time to make sure that cycling will get the attention it deserves in the next parliament. CTC has written the Vote Bike Manifesto to make sure that MPs in the next parliament know what they need to do to make cycling a mainstream form of transport.

CTC's Vote Bike campaign makes it easy to engage with your prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) and find out how committed they are to voting bike.

Here's how you can get involved:

* Review CTC's Vote Bike Manifesto and find out what we're asking from PPCs.
* Take action! Find out if your PPCs support Vote Bike, and send them a message asking them to sign up to the manifesto.

Our headline message is for government to:
Commit to double cycle use within ten years, making cycling mainstream in the longer term.

Changes to concessionary bus pass scheme for older people.

It may be helpful to know that there are 2 changes occuring to the concessionary bus pass scheme for older people. The first is the result of the County Council removing funding for early morning travel and the second is a national change bringing getting a bus pass for the first time into line with state pensionable age.

From 1 April 2010 across Nottinghamshire:

If you already have a pass you are still entitled to free bus travel between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday, all day at weekends and bank holidays. The pass also enables free travel on the Nottingham tram between 9.30am and 4pm and between 6pm and 11pm Monday to Friday, all day at weekends and bank holidays.

If you travel before 9.30am and after 11pm on weekdays then you will need to pay full fare.
The bus pass will no longer be valid on any trains.
The companion pass issued to people with certain types of disability (e.g. blind people) to allow a companion to travel with them, will be withdrawn.

Age of eligibility for new bus pass:
From 6 April 2010 the age of eligibility for a new first time bus pass will change. It will no longer be available at age 60. There is a sliding scale which eventually means that people become eligible when they reach pensionable age i.e. 65. Detailed dates of eligibility can be found from either Rushcliffe Council or Notts County Council.

She has been promoting Green Streets by selling badges at school, taking part of the Green Streets activities and now lately has written an article for the school magazine as well as the new local publication; Spotlight on West Bridgford.

WB coop has improved cycling parking

Great news! The improved cycle parking at WB Coop has now at last been installed, only just over 3 months since they admitted to me at a Nottingham Area Local Members meeting that they had made a mistake in not including this in their general store upgrade in 2008 and would now put that right "but it might take 6 weeks"!

The new cycle stands seem to have been well installed, with good spacing between them for loading your panniers, as well as front and back. Being silvery/grey and that much close to the edge of the store they are not very obvious and, for a moment, when I went there today, I thought that the old battered 'wheelgrabber' stands had disappeared without the new ones taking their place. It would help to have a bit of (discrete) signing to help draw attention to them, and perhaps including some mention of bike parking, alongside the current mention of car parking, as one of the store's facilities mentioned on the big sign near the main entrance.

The Coop did say back in November that, when they had carried out the improvements, they would be keen to get feedback on how well they were used and what people thought of them so do please encourage people to use them and make favourable comments!

NCT Success at UK Bus Awards 2009

Nottingham City Transport is today celebrating after picking up the Winning New Customers Award at the 2009 UK Bus Awards.

NCT beat off tough competition from 5 other entries – Arriva Midlands, Translink, First Glasgow, Ulink Bus Service and Stagecoach – to take the Department for Transport Winning New Customers Award, after the winners were announced this afternoon at the London Hilton Hotel.

Mark Fowles, NCT Managing Director commented, “Nottingham City Transport’s primary aim is to increase patronage and attract more people on to our buses, which we have successfully achieved in recent years. The Winning New Customers Award rewards our innovative approach to attracting car users in West Bridgford onto our buses, where nearly a third of our customers now choose to leave the car at home”.

The Department for Transport Winning New Customers Award recognises the success of NCT’s West Bridgford campaign last year, where a fleet of 22 new buses, at a cost of £3m, were introduced. Recognising the car as the main competitor, NCT sought to replicate car luxuries and benefits, by updating the bus product and image and supporting it with an extensive advertising campaign built around the theme of “a vehicle so advanced, they didn’t even need to drive it!”

The campaign increased patronage by 3.7% in a year and saw the number of customers leaving their car at home increase to 31% (up from 21% in 2005).

Other key results include:

• Continued patronage growth in the area – up 19.5% over 5 year period

• Increased customer satisfaction of 15% year on year

• 8% of users new to the service in the past year, with 65% quoting the marketing and image change as a motivator

• Passenger capacity increased on all routes by 40%

• New bus stop waiting facilities with better timetable information and more bus shelters installed by Nottinghamshire County Council to complement the scheme

• Vast improvements for disabled passengers with all buses fully wheelchair and disabled accessible – 9 years ahead of UK legislative requirements

The purpose of the UK Bus Awards is to recognise and reward the success and good practice in bus based public transport and attracted some 210 entries this year, the highest ever! NCT has been a shortlisted operator every year since first entering in 2002, picking up many awards and commendations.

Supermarket introduces bicycle trailer 2009

Albert Heijn, the Dutch supermarket chain, has introduced the first Albert Heijn bicycle trailer in Apeldoorn. The so-called iShop may be used inside the shop as a shopping cart and can be clipped onto the luggage carrier, once outside.

The trailer has been developed in close co-operation between bicycle manufacturer Gazelle and Albert Heijn. Apeldoorn local authorities support the initiative. Local authorities expect bicycle promotion to increase urban quality and improve access to the (centre of the) city. The experiment will last for six months, until March 1, 2010.

What a Brilliant Idea we could do with this in Ireland as most Bikes would not be able to hold much Groceries. There is only a few People who actually own Dutch Bikes or Bakfiets or those Bulitt Bikes. It is nice and Light for occasional use and some People would really Appreciate this without going to the Expense of Buying a Trailer. I think Feelers should be put out to see if there is a Market for them over Here in Ireland or in the UK. I would imagine it would have to be a lot Stronger than a Normal Shopping Trolly for it to be Towed behind a Bike in order for it to last . You could even take something like this on Touring down the Countryside

Over the winter months we are relying on our local businesses to promote what they are doing and joining in the Green streets celebrations on the last Friday of the month.

Most of you who have already signed up will have a window sticker, if you wish to have one, please let me know.

During the Summer months I have made posters and put them up in the Libraries, public notice boards etc to announce what is happening with regards to special events.

Now the weather has changed I have decided not to do these posters and rely on your individual businesses to put a poster in your windows announcing what incentives you are prepared to give to the customers who wear green and who have walked, cycled or used the bus to your premises.

Walking and cycling

As nearly a quarter of all car journeys are under two miles, walking or cycling is often a practical alternative to driving.

Why make fewer trips by car?

* Fewer car journeys will reduce the CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change.
* The fewer trips you make, the more money you save on fuel.
* Short journeys increase the wear and tear on your engine.
* If you have more than one car in your household, and more family members walked and cycled, you might be able to give up that extra car, saving thousands of pounds each year on running costs. Opening of the Meadow Lane canal lock riverside path link

In November there was the opening a new riverside path (the 'missing link') by the Meadow Lane lock between the riverside path from Victoria Embankment (under Trent Bridge) and the canal path by London Road and the Turney's Quay housing area, opposite the NFFC ground on the south bank.

The opening, by City Transport Portfolio Holder, Councillor, Jane Urquhart, was attended by a good crowd of cyclists, pedestrians and representatives of the City Council, British Waterways and other organisations and including two local MPs, Alan Simpson and John Heppell, which was good. Alan's speech included a reference to the closure of the Wilford Suspension Bridge and to the need for more good quality paths like this to encourage more people to walk on cycle, along the lines of the extensive system he had experience in Montreal, where his wife comes from.

NCT Launches Mobile Travel Centre

Nottingham City Transport’s latest bus takes to the streets this week – but it’s a bus with a difference that will certainly stand out from the rest!

The inside of the bus has been completely transformed, thanks to some excellent in-house work by NCT’s Engineering Department, with the seats removed and replaced by a purpose built counter and all the equipment needed to issue and renew Easyrider Citycard smart cards, that offer unlimited bus and tram travel from less than £1 per day.

The Mobile Travel Centre will visit local town centres and colleges across the city on 3 days per week to bring Nottingham City Transport closer to the communities served by the bus network. This new facility, partly supported by Nottingham City Council, offers customers a more convenient way to buy and renew discounted Easyrider Citycard travel cards closer to home, work or college and avoids the need to come into the busy Travel Centre in the City Centre.

As well as offering Easyrider Citycard issues and renewals, the bus also carries every NCT bus timetable and two dedicated on board Consultants are at hand to answer any query, question or enquiry about Nottingham City Transport.

NCT will visit West Bridgford Library every week on Thursdays.

In addition, the Mobile Travel Centre will also be visiting both the Clifton and West Bridgford campuses of South Nottingham College, which will help students top up their smart cards on site before lectures and whilst at South Nottingham College, the bus will also be open to local residents of West Bridgford and Clifton East too.

The Mobile Travel Centre will operate to the following timetable until Christmas – come along and talk to us, top up your Easyrider Citycard or pick up a timetable.

We’ll be looking for more sites in 2010 and if you have any suggestions about future locations, please contact us.
We're in West Bridgford Library every Thursday from 11am until 4pm and also at South Nottm College pm Thursdays 8.30am until 10am, where we are topping up.

Nottingham City Transport,Theatre Royal and Concert Hall are teaming up

Leave your car at home and use the bus or tram to travel to the Theatre Royal or Concert Hall with a £1 Royal Ticket.

The Royal Centre, Nottingham City Transport and the trams (Nottingham Express Transit) have teamed up to offer a return tram or bus ticket for just £1 per person to all customers booking tickets for events at the Theatre Royal or the Royal Concert Hall.

The special £1 Royal Tickets can be purchased from the box office at the same time as theatre tickets and are valid on all Nottingham City Transport buses within the Greater Nottingham City Area* and from all tram stops. Tickets are valid for one inward and one outward journey until the last bus or tram at midnight.

The £1 Royal Tickets can be booked in person at the Royal Centre box office in the Royal Concert Hall foyer on South Sherwood St or by telephone on 0115 989 5555. The Royal ticket can also be added to existing bookings by calling the box office.

Co-op is promoting walking busses

Walking to school gives children a really healthy start to their day. It also cuts down on car journeys, so it’s a great way for families to reduce their own carbon emissions. With the school run accounting for 18% of morning rush hour traffic, walking to school can also have a positive impact on local congestion.

However, many parents are understandably concerned about their children walking to school on their own. So, we help schools to set up walking buses – groups of children who walk to school together, accompanied by two adult volunteers – by providing them with a package of material, including high visibility vests for children and volunteers. Our commitment to support walking buses is just one part of our comprehensive programme to address global climate change.

If 15 children who were previously driven to school walked to school for a year, it would save 4,800 car journeys and 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide – the equivalent of six flights to New York.

How to apply for support for your walking bus

Is your school near a Co-operative Group store? Are you thinking of starting a walking bus?
If the answer to both questions is yes, you may be eligible for one of our Walking Bus packages, which includes the following materials:

* 40 junior or infant high visibility (hi-viz) vests
* 10 adult hi-viz vests
* a banner for the school railings, to promote the bus to children and parents)
* posters for use in the school to promote the bus
* 50 hi-viz snapbands to use as rewards for the walkers.

Cancer Research Compton Acres went Green on Green Streets

Although the picture did not do it justice, Cancer Research Compton Acres really went into the spirit of Green Streets last month. Dressing up the window in Green and doing a special event to celebrate Green Streets as well as raising much needed funds for the Cancer Research cause.

One of their shop volunteers Lynn Warsop from the Cancer Research Compton Acres, Wilford shop dressed the window in green by using green recycled bags , and making them into clothes. our theme on the last friday of each month is "Bag your Rags"Support us and the Green Streets Initiative by bringing us your rags for recycling.

Evo Energy will be present on the Croquet lawn to tell you all about PV

After having been to the West Bridgford Summer Gathering in June and the Renewable energy Expo last month, local firm Evo energy has installed several West Bridgford houses with Photo voltaic panels to generate their own electricity and to feed it back into the grid.

If ever there is a good time to think about installing these this might be it. You might be eligable for a £2,500 grant from the Low Carbon trust (until April 2010) and take advantage of the Feed in tariff.

A feed-in tariff is the name given to legislating a fixed price of purchase for every unit of electricity generated. The price is valid for twenty years and allows an investment to be made with confidence as opposed to the vagaries of fluctuating energy costs. This in turn encourages private investment in low carbon electricity generation that would otherwise have not taken place. The scheme was first introduced in Germany and has since spread across most of Europe. The thinking behind feed in tariffs is that the increased uptake of photovoltaics caused by the artificially inflated price of electricity will mobilise the industry and force prices down for those who install photovoltaics later. It is also likely to spark new investment in photovoltaic technology within this country and create jobs.

This local company has managed to come up with a wonderfully creative solution to combine your normal boiler, woodburning stove and solar panels to provide hot radiators and hot water from either sun, fire or if you were not blessed that day with either, the system automatically switches to your normal conventional boiler.

Although just in its first year of installation, Chris and Paul have installed several such systems recently locally and are happy to use their knowledge to help you care more for the environment and take advantage of free solar energy.

What Is The Free Shop?

The Free Shop is based in Forest Fields, Nottingham and has been running for a few years at several events around the city, including the amazing ‘Sounds on the Downs’ at Nottingham Uni and at The Art Organisation on Station Street.

This year, we have got much more professional, creating a mobile boutique which will travel to festivals in Nottingham and beyond, spreading the word about all that is free and allowing people to create whole new outfits and swap their unwanted goodies.

The new Free Shop Boutique is made entirely from reclaimed, second-hand or recycled materials and boasts a brand new (to us!) Singer treadle sewing machine, allowing us to offer a wide selection of workshops. The clothes you bring don't have to be wearable - if they are only useful for the fabric they are useful to us for our workshops - if they're stained or old or ripped we can still make them into something beautiful so bring it all along!

Caffe Nero is setting the trend to waste less

The Central Avenue branch of Caffe Nero has been chosen as one of the 5 trial stores in the country to recycle every bit of waste they have (except food waste as there are currently no facilities for this)

They will support the Green Streets initiative and will give an upgrade from a regular to a large hot drink to those who wear something green and have walked or cycled and to those of you who can show a valid bus ticket.

Matt from Re-education (Renewable energy education) brought some music to the event as well as a fountain and bubble machine, as long as there were enough people to peddle as their energy was needed to make it all work. Lots of fun and interest for those who joined in

This morning very early I went out to harvest excess vegetables from my garden and allotments.
Pears, plums, windfall apples, cucumbers, marrows, spinach beet and potatoes were handed out with the message on how much energy goes into mass food growing, harvesting,transporting, processing and recycling of packaging.

Even if you just grow one or two types of fruit of vegetables you make a great impact.

The strong winds and rain did not deter everyone. A steady stream of people came, helped themselves to this lovely produce and hopefully got the message.

Warhammer world trip on Green Streets walk/ride day!

On the coming walk/ride day (Friday 28th August) a few members of Staff of Games workshop will be cycling at 10am from Co-op car park in West Bridgford to Warhammer World on Willow Road in Lenton. A short ride (about 30 minutes) but Games Workshop is providing 4 hours of fun, like painting, lunch and gaming. Back in Bridgford at 2.30pm

A local artist, Hazel Ellerby-Sansom, has a spot on the 4th plinth as part of the One and Other exhibition in Trafalgar Square and is wanting to celebrate green messages from women in the East Midlands via the medium of a patchwork quilt! Francine has put together a 12” squareas she thought it would be nice to theme it on the West Bridgford Green Streets initiative. .

Hazel Ellerby-Sansom should be on the plinth on Wednesday 12th August at 3.00pm GMT.

Every month Phunky foto's will be on the croquet lawn, so dress in something funny, smart, but definitively in Green, stand out and you may have a chance to be picked for that month's photo session at their studio in Tudor square.

News from the Becket School

One of the teachers, Darren Scott has tried to get the message across at the Becket that it’s National Bike Week. He has had a few pupils come up to him and say that they’ve cycled to school for the first time this week. Others have said that they plan to do so. Still others have said they would but their parents aren’t happy about the idea.

To try to improve the confidence of parents, The Becket School will be offering Notts County Council’s Bikeability training to the new national standards in cycling (the old cycling proficiency) to all new students from September.

He is going to advertise the Walk/Ride Day next week and the Sustrans Change Your World Campaign the week after.

It’s all go!

Hope the next Walk/Ride Day is even bigger than the last.

I am so pleased that we even have a secondary School on board who can see the importance of sustainable transport. Way to go!

Over 200 vegetable plants were grown for the general public by other local people to try and get more people to grow their own food and reduce food miles.

In addition to all those wonderful people who came on the day to swap their plants, I would like to thanks Trish, Nicola, Sally C, Sally T, Jonathan, the Friary Drop-in allotment gardeners, joe, Dianne, Monique, Cliffe, Brian, Huan, Kate, Juliet, Liz, Maureen, Jola, Gordon, Bren and Mike for kindly donating their plants so that so many others could enjoy truly locally grown vegetables.

My thanks also go to the volunteers who made the event a big success: Mark from Taste, Nicola, Jonathan, Thomas, Michael, Mark, Ryan, Asher, Dulip, Sally, Andy P, Chris the Park keeper and Bren for help before and on this Green Streets walk ride day.

A story about small steps...

Eleanor's friend aged 11, lives at the top of Musters Rd (near cricket ground) and has never walked to school alone before. Parental commitments meant they usually had to travel by car.
On Green Streets Friday she and her younger brother were determined to walk to school but neither parent was available so for the first time they walked alone. It went so well they've now decided to do it regularly!

Foraging this month: Elderflower cordial

ELDERFLOWER
Latin Name: Sambucus nigra
Family: Caprifoliaceae
Height: Tree - Up to 10m
Elder flower is used in human herbal medicine for colds, flu, allergies and catarrh but also arthritis.

Do not feed the leaves or bark. The berries need to be cooked for human use and the raw berries are unsuitable for herbivores, although the extract is a rich source of vitamin C and considered a good remedy for flu.

Constituents: Flavanoids, volatile oil, phenolic acids, triterpenes, sterols, mucilage, tannins

Actions: Diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic.

This month a group of around 10 of us walked along the Green Line with Julie who managed to show us many variety of plants which can be used for wine making, salads and for medicinal use. We ended up at the Shared Garden to have a rest underneath the orchard trees. We had elder flower cordial which was made a day before. For those who could not make it but would like the recipe here goes:

Elder Flower cordial
20 heads of elderflower
1.8kg granulated sugar, or caster sugar
1.2 litres water (boiling)
2 unwaxed Lemons,
50g citric acid

Put all the ingredients in the pan and pour the boiling water over it. Stir to disolve the sugar and let stand for 24 hours. Strain and it is ready to drink.
If you would like to keep it for a long while, bring to boil again and pour into sterilized bottles.

Lovely with fizzy water, a slice of lemon or mint
